Major Proposals Committee

Major Proposals Committee

The Major Proposals Committee is a subcommittee of the Student Council. Its job is to write proposals for changes to the current Academy policies. When a change is suggested, the committee talks to various members of the Academy community, both students and faculty members, to assess what the perceived problems are with the current policy, what type of new policy the community would like to see, and what type of policy would likely be passed by both students and faculty.

Then the committee meets to draft a proposal, working closely with the Student-Faculty Committee to ensure that new proposal is as acceptable as possible to everyone. This proposal may pass back and forth between the Major Proposals and Student-Faculty Committees multiple times before both committees are pleased with the result. Then the heads of both committees present the proposal to the faculty at their weekly faculty meeting, and after discussion, the faculty will vote on the proposal.

The most recently passed proposal was the revised dress code, which eliminates the sport coat for boys, and allows girls to wear jeans even if they don't wear a blazer, but upholds the tie and collared shirt for boys, and the collared shirt or blouse for girls. This year we will work on a proposal to open the Internet until midnight for .edu and .gov sites (the whole Internet currently shuts off at 11:00 in dorms.) We will also work on a proposal to give students more sleep, which would be a good thing. A third proposal is below for your reading pleasure.

This year I will be the head of the Major Proposals Committee. I was on the committee last year, when I participated in the discussion and editing of the driving proposal, and drafted a proposal that would allow increased Internet use in dorms after 11 PM. Tyler Goodspeed, my good friend, is the Student Council President this year, so he appointed me to this position because he knows how hard I work, and we tend to work well together. I know all three of the exectutive board members well, so I anticipate an enjoyable and productive year!
