My Classes

At school, I take five classes, which each meet four times a week for 50 (thrice) or 75 (once) minutes.

I am taking Advanced Writing, also known as the creative writing class, also known as English 411 (normal English is 410), also known as Varsity English. We all had to apply to be in this class by submitting essays we'd written and an explanation as to why we wanted to be in the class. This is a two-term course, so I'll be with this great class for 2/3 of the year! I am very lucky. In the fall, we focused on writing fiction, namely short stories. We read a bunch of short stories and some excerpts from books about writing fiction, and we did a lot of writing exercises. The term culminated in each of us writing our own short story. We edited and discussed each other's writing, and, as Gloria said, "they were all brilliant." I really liked mine. It bordered on metafiction, and it was really fun to write.

I finished my schol's calculus sequence last year, so now I'm taking geometry. While that might indicate that I am sliding backwards, considering the standard Algebra-Geometry-Algebra II-Trigonometry-Calculus series, this is actually not a regression. Mr. Parris taught the class in the fall, and we explored inversion, perspective, and various models for understanding planes in general. That was a fun class. There were some extremely smart people in it, which is, after all, the best way for a class to be.

I am taking two AP classes, as you would probably expect. The first is physics, which is a three-term (year-long) sequence. It's kind of nice to be taking physics, considering that I've already taken normal physics, so we're actually covering the same topics again. I really like physics, because I can use the concepts we learn to understand a lot of things that occur in my daily life. And besides, the experiments and demonstrations we do are really neat.

The second is French literature, also a year-long sequence. In the fall term, we started with 15th-century poetry, including that of Louise Labe, Ronsard, and La Fontaine. Then we read L'Ecole des Femmes (Moliere) and Candide (Voltaire). I am very excited for the Winter term, because Mr. Reiter will teach the classes, and he is a friend of mine.

In terms of electives, in the fall I took Politics of Public Policy; this winter I am taking Psychology, and in the spring I will take a "senior studies" course called Education in America.

These keep me busy and entertained! I hope whatever you're doing is similarly fun. Thanks for reading about my classes.
